Solana's native token, SOL, is central to the network's operation, serving as the medium for transaction fees, staking, and network governance. The token economics are designed around a disinflationary issuance schedule combined with a burning mechanism for transaction fees to manage the total supply over time.
Issuance Mechanism
Solana utilizes a disinflationary inflation schedule to issue new SOL tokens. This schedule is deterministic and parameterized by three key rates:
- Initial Inflation Rate: The starting annualized growth rate of the total current supply when inflation is first enabled. The token issuance rate can only decrease from this point.
- Disinflation Rate: The rate at which the inflation rate is reduced over time. Inflation decreases by 15.00% per "epoch year" (approximately 360 days, or 180 epochs).
- Long-term Inflation Rate: The stable, long-term annual inflation rate, which is fixed at 1.50% once the disinflationary period concludes.
The actual inflation rate observed on the network, known as the Effective Inflation Rate, accounts for the concurrent elimination of tokens through burning mechanisms.
Allocation Mechanism
The initial distribution of SOL tokens included allocations to the project team, the Solana Foundation, and a Community Reserve Fund.

1. Transaction Fees and Burning
Users pay transaction fees in SOL for sending transactions and executing smart contracts. These fees consist of a static base fee per signature plus a variable fee based on computational resources used.
- Burning Mechanism: 50% of each transaction fee is burned, permanently removing it from the supply. This mechanism contributes to long-term economic stability and acts as a deflationary pressure.
- Validator Reward: The remaining 50% of the transaction fee is retained by the validator that processes the transaction. A governance proposal (SIMD-0096) was approved in May 2024 that would send 100% of all network transaction fees in a given block to the Slot Leader validator, though this update was pending devnet activation as of December 8, 2024.
2. Staking and Validator Rewards
Solana uses a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism where SOL is staked to secure the network.
- Validator Incentives: Validators receive inflationary SOL rewards pro rata based on the proportion of the total staked tokens they control (including delegated tokens). They also receive a portion of transaction fees.
- Delegation: Tokenholders can delegate their SOL to existing validators to earn a share of the validator's inflationary rewards and transaction fees, minus any commission rate set by the validator. Staking helps offset the dilutive effects of inflation.
- Rent Charges: Validators can also earn rewards from rent charges, although as of December 8, 2024, 100.00% of all rent fees are burned, and validators receive 0.00% of these fees.
3. Governance
The network uses a Feature Proposal process for activating network changes, which is performed solely by the network's validators.
- Voting Mechanism: SOL tokens are not directly used for voting. Instead, tokens representing the total active stake on the network are minted and distributed to validators based on their stake. Validators vote by transferring these "vote tokens" to a predetermined address.
- Proposal Cost: The proposer is responsible for financing the creation of one vote account for every validator, costing approximately 0.00203928 SOL per account.
4. Slashing (Proposed)
While the Solana protocol has historically operated without slashing, a proposal (SIMD-0212) is under active discussion to introduce a mechanism for punishing adverse validator behavior. This proposal suggests burning delegated stake using a quadratic function to determine the penalty amount, adding an extra layer of security.

The locking and vesting mechanisms for SOL primarily relate to initial allocations made to early investors and related entities, such as Alameda Research and FTX Trading.
