In the latest FTX news, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the former CEO of FTX, is back in the legal spotlight. This time, he’s pushing for Judge Lewis Kaplan to recuse himself from his ongoing case. Moreover, he’s once again trying to get a new trial over FTX’s 2022 collapse.

FTX News: What Made Sam Bankman-Fried Speak Up?

Sam Bankman-Fried posted his complaints on X, drawing a comparison to a different legal saga involving Judge Kathaleen McCormick. She recently handed off several high-profile cases tied to Elon Musk after facing bias allegations, though she denied any wrongdoing.

As per the FTX news and Sam Bankman-Fried, it’s the kind of scrutiny he believes his own judge should face.

“Delaware’s top judge just stepped aside from three cases over alleged bias,” he posted. SBF then accused Kaplan of acting out of line during his trial.

As per the FTX news, he claims Kaplan “didn’t hide his disdain,” saying things in front of the jury in a way that “many journalists didn’t even know was allowed.”

According to Sam Bankman-Fried, Kaplan practically pushed for a quick verdict by offering “pizza and a ride home if they could reach a verdict in under 5 hours.” He also spotlighted Kaplan’s pre-verdict comment: “God knows there’s more than sufficient evidence [of fraud].”

As far as Bankman-Fried is concerned, statements like that should force Kaplan to step aside. The FTX news on the fight to get Kaplan off the case comes as the judge reviews Bankman-Fried’s request to overturn his conviction. Kaplan recently demanded some clarity in a court letter.

Kaplan Spotlights Discrepancy In SBF’s Recent Filings

The judge questioned whether Sam Bankman-Fried properly followed legal procedure in asking for a retrial. In his response, Kaplan wrote:

“Defendants in criminal cases have the right to represent themselves — i.e., to act pro se — or to be represented by counsel. They do not have the right to do both at the same time.”

The FTX news showed that he ordered Bankman-Fried to officially state whether his lawyers helped draft the recent filing. Bankman-Fried’s argument for a new trial centers on new evidence. It includes statements from a former colleague who says he would’ve testified for him if given the chance.

However, the process has been complicated by procedural concerns. Bankman-Fried’s mother, a Stanford Law professor, filed some of the paperwork. Kaplan pointed out that she “lacks standing to file papers or seek relief in this case” despite her legal expertise.

Further scrutiny came up as prosecutors spotted another oddity. They highlighted that one court document showed up using a courier service that inmates don’t have access to.

The package seemed to come from near Stanford University, not the prison where Bankman-Fried is held. In the FTX news, Kaplan took note, saying these details only “enhanced” doubts about whether the filings followed procedural standards.

Now, Bankman-Fried faces new deadlines to spell out exactly who’s helping him and to answer prosecutors’ questions on the record. Earlier, U.S. prosecutors urged the court to reject SBF’s retrial plea.
